Mine reviews need clearly defined timelines, timelier reviews, reduced regulatory burdens and less duplication during assessment, said Prime Minister Stephen Harper during a tour of the Minto Mine in the Yukon on Tuesday.
“Our Government is committed to ensuring that Northerners benefit from the tremendous natural resource reserves that are found in their region,” said the Prime Minister in a statement.
“For the benefits to flow, it is necessary to get resource projects up and running in an effective and responsible way and to put agreements in place with territorial Governments to ensure that revenues generated by these initiatives stay up North.”
Harper’s government rolled out regulatory changes to the approval process for mines in its March budget. His government has been under pressure around the Northern Gateway pipeline, which is garnering political opposition.
The Minto Mine is run by Capstone Mining Corp. (TSX:CS) and produces copper, gold and silver.
The ATV run was on the Carcross Desert, a series of sand dunes near Carcross, Yukon.

Seriously Mr.Harper!
Have you even asked one local person from up north “what does the north want”
& actually listened!!
We want to preserve our home. Our land. Economic benefits are good, but money comes and goes, there are many countries out there with no such beauty as northern canada, why ruin it for something that will go away again, and leave northern resident with ugly.
