Mining Association of BC chooses announces Teck’s executive as 2012 mining person of the year

The Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC), as part of its annual BC Mining Week celebrations, announced today that the 2012 recipient of the MABC Mining Person of the Year Award was issued Mr. Douglas H. Horswill, Senior Vice President of Teck Resources Ltd.

Recipients of the Mining Person of the Year award are those outstanding individuals who lead by example in innovation, safety, sustainable development and corporate social responsibility.

“Doug Horswill exemplifies the diversity of the modern day mining professional. They need to understand the technical side of the operations, the value and importance of conserving the environment in which we operate and the interests and demands of various communities that may benefit from a vibrant mining sector,” said Richard Prokopanko, Chairman of the Board, Mining Association of BC. “Mr. Horswill has that diversity of expertise, knowledge and character. He is a perfect choice as Mining Person of the Year 2012.”

Over the span of his twenty year mining industry career, Mr. Horswill has been instrumental in building Teck’s approach to sustainability. Prior to joining Teck Resources Ltd., Mr. Horswill spent an additional twenty years in Public Service where, as Deputy Minister of Finance and Corporate Relations, and Deputy Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources for British Columbia, he led and effectively contributed to public policy development. Mr. Horswill’s tireless contributions have benefitted not only the Province’s mining industry but they have also positively affected mining’s reputation and place in society around the globe.

Mr. Horswill is a recognized visionary and has served, and still serves, numerous organizations in leadership positions including: Sunny Hill Care Centre for Children (Director); BC Innovation Council (Director); Insurance Corporation of BC (Director); BC Business Council (Exec.); ICMM (Exec.); Mining Association of BC (Chairperson). During his tenure, he advanced policy initiatives to improve the conditions for exploration and mining in BC. He is currently the Chairman of the Mining Association of Canada where he leads the Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) program.

In 2011, Doug Horswill championed the Zinc Alliance for Child Health (ZACH), a partnership with the Government of Canada and the Micronutrient Initiative, aimed at developing and sustaining zinc treatment programs to help save children’s lives throughout the world.

MABC represents companies involved in the exploration and development, mining and smelting of minerals, metals, coal and industrial minerals in British Columbia. It is regarded as the pre-eminent voice of mining in the province.

The MABC’s Senior Executive Committee acts as the Nominating and Award Adjudication Committee for the Mining Person of the Year Award.
