Two mines among costliest Canadian contaminated sites

Two Canadian mines are among the country’s most expensive contaminated sites to remediate, CBC News reports.

The report by Canada’s Environmental Commissioner does not disclose financial details but names the four sites reported as having the highest financial liabilities:

1. Port Hope Area Contaminated Sites, Ontario- 1.38 million cubic metres of low-level radioactive waste including radium 226, uranium and arsenic;

2. Welcome Waste Management Facility, Port Hope, Ont. – 620,000 cubic metres of low-level radioactive waste.

3. Faro Mine, Yukon- 64,000 hectares of contaminated soil and groundwater requiring at least 100 years of treatment.

4. Giant Mine, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories- 237,000 tonnes of arsenic trioxide dust stored in 15 underground chambers, 16 million tonnes of tailings, three tailings ponds and eight open pits.
