Whitehaven Coal sees higher prices on disruptions
The company's Blackwater and Daunia mines in Queensland, which it recently purchased from BHP, produced 4.8 million tonnes.
GigaOMtech predicts that the solar sector will do very well in India because the government is heavily involved in the coal and the oil and gas sector.
India heavily regulates the energy sector. It imposes prices caps on oil and coal, which is hampering growth and investment, and the lack of reliable power is creating an opening for solar power.
Also, India has some built in advantages for solar facilities, namely flat, sunny and desolate landscapes that are ideal.
Of course, solar could (and will, no doubt) face the same infrastructure and political problems that coal is facing. But the situation at least puts solar on somewhat equal footing with coal. For example, the Indian state of Gujarat — a hot bed of solar power development over the past year — recently celebrated the commissioning of 600 MW of solar energy projects over a year.
The Indian state has attracted many U.S. solar manufacturers and project developers and over 50 companies have built solar power projects in the state.
