Chieftain Metals addresses historic environmental legacy at Tulsequah

TORONTO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – April 12, 2012) –

Chieftain Metals Inc. (“Chieftain” or the “Company”) (TSX:CFB) is pleased to announce receipt of the Discharge Permit for the newly built Water Treatment Plant (“IWTP”) located at the Tulsequah Chief mine project. The IWTP was constructed by Chieftain to address the historic environmental concerns of acid mine drainage from previous mine workings and has been in full operational and commissioning mode since December 2011.

Victor Wyprysky, President and CEO of Chieftain Metals Inc., commented: “Chieftain’s immediate attention to provide a solution to the historic environmental issues at Tulsequah demonstrates the high importance we place on community and stakeholders concerns as we move “The Chief” to construction start.”

Treatment of mine-impacted water thus far has shown significant improvement in discharge water quality, with initial test results showing a reduction of greater than 98% of the metals load compared with un-treated mine waters. Additionally, the water discharged from the plant is within regulatory water quality guidelines and the Company is consistently achieving high-quality plant discharge water with contaminant levels below the published limits of the Federal Government’s Metal Mining Effluent Regulations. Although a short-term solution, this water treatment process will ensure that the water entering the Tulsequah River is clean and does not negatively impact the rivers’ fish and aquatic life.
