Hire more women to save money: consultant

Hiring more women to work at mines in Hunter Valley, NSW could save companies money because they are easier on the equipment, says a workplace consultant.

ABC News reports consultant Glenise Anderson saying that “women are known for handling mine machinery better than their male colleagues, which can lead to significant savings.”:

They are very gentle on the equipment, they tend to report anything that’s wrong they don’t feel they need to push the equipment to keep it going. So they’re very reliable and accountable for working with equipment.

The New South Wales Minerals Council launched a Women in Mining Network this week to boost female participation in the industry , which stands at just 10%.

Anderson said the demographics in New South Wales are more conducive to women working in mining than Queensland:

You have a culture in Queensland of fly-in/fly-out where New South Wales tends to be more residential, which is much better for families. They also have crib-relief so women can work hours that are family-friendly, which is not something that works in central Queensland.

Mining companies in Australia are considering flying foreign workers directly to their operations as the country, particularly the north-east state of Queensland, struggles to fill massive job shortages, reports local media outlet Adelaide Now.
