Mining’s old guard needs strong medicine
A new report details subpar investor returns in the mining industry over the last decade, particularly big cap diversified companies which have not adapted to new realities.
Outotec has agreed with Minera Lumina Copper S.A. on the delivery of a copper solvent extraction and electrowinning plant for the Caserones project, located in high mountains in northern Chile. The contract value is approximately EUR 65 million.
Outotec´s scope covers engineering, technology and proprietary equipment supplies, construction, commissioning and performance tests.
The Caserones copper plant will incorporate latest Outotec® technologies, such as solvent extraction with Vertical Smooth Flow (VSF) technology and tank farm, as well as electrowinning using Outotec® permanent cathode, acid mist capture and stripping technologies. Outotec´s delivery time for the plant, which is designed to produce 30,000 tonnes of copper cathodes annually, will be 30 months.
“Many mining companies are now exploring lower grade ore-bodies and are looking for technologies, which allow economical utilization of those resources. With an average copper grade of 0.34%, the Caserones deposit is a good example of this development.
