Canada’s Endeavour Mining (TSX:EDV) announced on Tuesday that its chief executive officer, Sébastien de Montessus, is donating 30% of his base salary to efforts helping to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
Other members of the management team have also committed to give a portion of their salaries, for the next three months, the company said.
Endeavour will match the funds to result in a total donation of $1 million, which when added to previous spending on community initiatives, brings the miner’s total donation to $6 million.
The West Africa-focused miner also said the employees who tested positive for covid-19 in March had fully recovered, adding that its operations in Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Mali continue at normal levels, with increased health and safety measures in place.
The company last month bought smaller rival Semafo (TSX: SMF) in a C$1 billion ($691 million) deal, which made it the biggest gold producer in Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast, with production estimated at over 1 million ounces a year.
Billionaire Egyptian Naguib Sawiris’s family holding, La Mancha, owns about 30% of Endeavour Mining.
