Anglo American and Xstrata among four companies accused of environmental violations in Australia

Anglo American (LON:AAL) and Xstrata (LON:XTA) coal mines are among the four operations being investigated over probable environmental violations, after they were accused of discharging contaminated water into the Fitzroy River, located in the North East state of Queensland, Australia.

The Queensland Government says there has been an inquiry launched into compliance issues at Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance’s (BMA) Peak Downs coal mine, Anglo American’s German Creek and Callide coal mines, and Xstrata’s Cook colliery, reports The Morning Bulletin.

The investigation, says the news outlet, comes as the government stated that six mines – BMA’s Saraji, Rio Tinto’s Hail Creek, Yancoal’s Minerva mine, Peabody Energy’s Burton, Macarthur’s Moorvale, and Wesfarmers Curragh coal mine – are all pumping under approvals.
