The folks at Karus Chains asked themselves the question of who owns most of the world’s gold. Of course an open question like this will only throw up more questions.
They wondered whether they should look at the countries that mine the most gold, or the countries that buy most of the precious metal. And how about countries that export the most gold jewellery and those that import the most?
In the end, they decided to focus on answering the following question: What countries have the largest gold reserves?
So they designed this map, which shows how 88% of the total gold reserves is held by only 20 countries:
