Chasing the carat: How Queen of Diamonds Eira Thomas came full circle

Geologist Eira Thomas was dubbed Canada’s “Queen of Diamonds” for helping discover Diavik, Canada’s second diamond mine.
She then cofounded Stornoway Diamonds, which took possession of Quebec’s Renard diamond project with a hostile takeover of Ashton Mining.
She resigned from the Stornoway board in August 2011 and took some time off, but has a few new assignments that should keep her busy.
In September, Thomas joined the board of Dundee Precious Metals, the Ned Goodman-backed mining and prospect-generating company. Then, in February, she was named president and CEO of Kaminak Gold, which is developing the Coffee gold deposit in the Yukon.
But Thomas has also returned to her diamond exploration roots. She has joined forces with her father, legendary prospector Gren Thomas, to option several diamond exploration projects from Stornoway Diamonds, in a little-reported deal announced on March 14.
