Zimbabwe lithium miners want royalties to be linked to prices
The battery metal has slumped from a peak in late 2022 amid oversupply and weak demand from the electric vehicle sector.
Striking workers have shut down the operations at a Rustenburg mine owned by Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd. (JSE: IMP), reports Bloomberg.
About 3,000 employees didn’t report for work at the No. 14 shaft on Monday in protest of the dismissal of one of their fellow workers, the company said.
Neither the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union nor the National Union of Mineworkers have commented on the job action.
Implats, the world’s second largest platinum producer, said in May that more of its mines are losing money as prices decline and costs rise.
Meanwhile, the South African government is considering bringing in peacekeeping forces to deal with ongoing tensions in the mining sector.
