Barrick CEO expects deal with Mali on new mining code by year-end
Reuters sources have said that Mali is seeking around $500 million in unpaid taxes from Barrick.
African Mining Indaba is the world’s largest mining investment event and Africa’s largest mining event.
Africa’s largest mining and investment show, Mining Indaba, is underway this week in Cape Town, South Africa.
The six-day event, Cape Town International Convention Centre, will feature 1,800 companies. Organizers expect that 20,000 hotel rooms will be sold to accommodate all the visitors.
The 19-year-old event has directed billions of dollars of investment into the African mining sector.
A few of the high profile speakers are Western Australia’s Premier Colin Barnett, Harmony Gold’s CEO Graham Briggs and Robert Friedland, chairman of Ivanhoe Capital Corporation.
2013 was a record breaking year, with more than 7,800 individuals representing more than 1,500 international companies from 100 countries and approximately 45 African and non-African government delegations.
